- Bole, a town associated with the pre-colonial Gonja Kingdom in the
Northern Region of Ghana for the past two decades has gradually emerged
as one of the important towns for small-scale gold mining in the region.
Mining has been a long-standing occupation of Gonja people. Using oral
interviews, personal observation and archival sources, this paper
discusses the long term changes, in mining in Gonjaland. The paper also
highlights some of the tensions that arose between Gonja chiefs and the
colonial administration over mining and mining rights in Gonja and the
long term effects of mining in the Bole district.
